The story “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck takes place on a ranch down in the Salinas Valley, where there are three main characters. These three characters consist of Elisa Allen, Henry Allen and the repairman. Elisa is Henry’s wife, she worked on their farm to harvest the Chrysanthemums each season. Henry was the man who owned the farm, but always had other things to take care of such as his steers. Then the repairman, he was the man that traveled from Seattle to San Diego on a wagon. Most people don't just throw out attention like its a candy cane therefore more people will assume or look more lonely than they really appear to be. Elisas continued to check her crops for bugs and anything that would affect them, but then, her attention was caught as the sound of her husband's voice said quietly, ‘“at it again,” he said. “You’ve got a strong new crop coming.”’ (10) Her mood was then changed to sound a little happier, but still in the same dissatisfied stage as she was when her was over talking to the two men. Quite eager for attention she was given just what she was looking for. When people beg for attention they usually get what they want.
