Lord Of The Flies: A Hidden Force Emerging Darkness, The complete or partial lack of light. Darkness is where evil hides, a place void of all light or good. In William Golding’s novel Lord Of The Flies, the descent into darkness by young impressionable boys is heavily explored. Isolation from the outside world confines the boys to themselves, bringing the worst parts of themselves out into the light. Fear also plays a big part in the boys' descent, the boys began valuing their own life over others motivating them to kill or harm others in their way. Losing such human traits animalizes them, bringing them closer to the animalistic evil the beast embodies. Additionally, an addiction to the thrill of violence causes Roger to dehumanize Ralph and think of him as the pigs he hunts. As Ralph tries to rescue Samneric he is warned that, “Roger sharpened a stick on both ends” (190) and wants to mount Ralph’s head on it like a pig. Roger descends into madness as he considers Ralph to be more prey than human. Roger gets addicted to the violent hunts and dehumanizes Ralph to the pigs he hunts. The small violent acts Roger commits over his time on the island pools together and breaks him free from the shackles of society, freeing him to his own monstrous disposition. Rogers constant desire for violence pushes him deeper into evil, fully unveiling his savage and evil intentions. Society creates one’s good, this good is used as one’s logical thinking and reasoning abilities. Evil hides in the darkness emerging when violence, isolation or fearfulness is shown by oneself.
