Imagine you are a parent taking your child's first day of school. Your child is so excited to learn and to meet new friends. But in reality that's not the case at all, the school looks nice, but it can't afford books, good food, clean water or even enough desks. It's a sad reality, but many schools cannot afford luxuries like this. Many people blame the state for not funding enough, but what about the lottery? Many states have chosen the lottery to fund their schools, but again the sad reality is that many of the schools that are currently being funded by the lottery are still in the same condition as they were before, and maybe even worse.
There are many reasons for this , for example the lottery makes 70 billion dollars every year, and

States like utah that fund 6,500 dollars a student if there are 500 students that only 3.25 million, that's obviously not enough for desks, food, water, and paying their staff, and states like new york get 20,000 per student, if a school has 500 students that's only 10 million to buy food, water desk etc (brown). Oklahoma is the state with the least funding for schools, which is bad because they also have one of the biggest high schools in the country with over 3.600 students enrolled, but not only is it school funding its also teacher pay, oklahoma has the lowest teacher pay in the nation, and where does oklahoma get their funding? You guessed it the lottery. In places where the crime rate is high, and it's dangerous to even walk your kid to school or sit outside and enjoy your day without having to watch your back and front simultaneously you would hope your child is safe and getting a good education at school right? Wrong again! Many schools in chicago like Waukegan only get 12,000 dollars a student (To see divide between rich schools and poor, look to Waukegan and Stevenson), which again if there are 500 students that would only be 6 million dollars for all of the things students need, …show more content…
For example in 1995 michigan there was 16 billion dollars in funding, in 2017 it has dropped to 12 billion (hechtman), that's 4 BILLION dollars that they could be putting toward bettering our futures education, but the lottery would rather spend it on people who waste their money on paper games that can give you money if you win. Even worse in oklahoma in 2005 lottery funding was at 750 million, that's already not a lot, but it gets worse, in 2017 it is down to only 66.4 MILLION. That's to split in between every single school in oklahoma, now wonder why their teacher pay is down? And worse of all in north carolina the lottery started funding in 2005, 4 years later they had massive budget cuts. “As of 2016, the state devoted a smaller portion of its total budget to education than it did before starting the lottery
