The UDC Mission As the only public university in the District of Columbia and the only urban land-grant university in the United States, UDC has long been committed to community service as a core part of its mission. From when it was formed in 1976, UDC has focused on serving the diverse needs of District residents, especially those relating to higher education, but also various other community cultural and information needs as well. Through several different means, UDC plays an active role in every part of the city, educating and enriching the lives of students, neighbors and stakeholders. In discussing these essential functions, this chapter focuses on what value LRD provides to the greater DC community, how LRD performs these services, and what their significance is (in other words, LRD’s unique value proposition]. To do this, in each of the major functional areas covered, LRD addresses issues such as: (1) Relevancy: how LRD meet student/faculty needs and what specific benefits LRD provide them; (2) the Significance of the services covered and how these influence UDC and the community; and (3) Legacy: LRD’s accomplishments and their contributions over time. LRD service includes a broad array of initiatives pursued over time such as information literacy, UDC’s Center for Advanced Learning (CAL), the Foundation Center, and LRD’s collaboration with the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) (MACS Self-Study, 2015; MACS Reaffirmation Report, 2016).
In the instances discussed, this chapter specifically identifies the current and pressing needs in the District of Columbia and its metropolitan area that the WRLC addresses.
