MK-Ultr The Use Of Brainwashing

1339 Words6 Pages

Brainwashing is a widely used tactic to control people, and destroy individuality. The formal definition is to make (someone) adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible pressure. Governments, cults, religions, news outlets, social media, and advertising companies all attempt to use brainwashing. The world wide web is a hot spot for brainwashing. In democratic countries I believe it’s harder to control all citizens. This is because of all the rights we have, such as free speech. Meanwhile in a dictatorship, citizens have the ideals and principles of their governments forced down their throats.

They attempted to do so by drugging unsuspecting civilians, and CIA members themselves. This operation was called M.K. Ultra. “MK-Ultra was a top-secret CIA project in which the agency conducted hundreds of clandestine experiments—sometimes on unwitting U.S. citizens—to assess the potential use of LSD and other drugs for mind control, information gathering and psychological torture”. (“MK-Ultra. History.com”). This program was only made public, in 1975, after the CIA was investigated for other illegal activity. “These revelations resulted in Ford’s 1976 Executive Order on Intelligence Activities that prohibited “experimentation with drugs on human subjects, except with the informed consent, in writing and witnessed by a disinterested party, of each such human subject.” (“MK-Ultra. History.com”) I find it extremely disturbing that the government tortured and experimented on their own people. There are many accounts of people who ended up brain dead, after this traumatic experience. The USA, and Canadian government gave settlements of $78,000 to 77 patients who were reduced to a child-like state. Other patients who went through the same treatments, were denied compensation because they were seen as not damaged …show more content…

Cults use brainwashing to recruit, and keep members devoted to their cause. One group that comes to mind, when I think of brainwashing is the Manson Family. The leader was Charles Manson, who before he started this cult had spent half his life in prison. Charles was a singer/songwriter who had some association with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. “Manson believed that he was the new Messiah, and that after a "nuclear attack" he and his followers would be saved by hiding in a secret world under the desert. His prophetic visions included a belief that the race war would result in a black victory, and Manson along with his Family members would have to mentor the black community, as they would lack experience to run the planet.” (Charles Manson. biography.com) Charles had his closest followers so convinced of this nonsense, that they would listen to whatever he said. Under Manson’s instructions, four of his inner circle members committed several murders of rich and famous people in LA. His followers brutally murdered and tortured four famous people, and a boy visiting a friend in the guest house on the property. Eight month pregnant actress Sharon Tate was stabbed, after begging for mercy for her unborn child. LSD, and magic mushrooms were used recreationally amongst the cult on Manson's ranch in the San Fernando Valley. I believe these drugs weaken the mind if used incorrectly,
