Nelson Mandela vs. Malcolm X
In the 1960’s civil rights activists spoke around the world, Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X were two major spokesmen for the human rights movement. Both men fought for the same cause but used different tactics. The goal was equal rights among blacks and an end to segregation and police brutality towards the blacks. Two tactics were used in the fight for equality one being non violence and the other violence.
Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X were two completely different men, but both were born into religious families. Nelson Mandela was born July 18, 1918 in a small South African village, his father was the chief of their tribe who studied Christianity. Malcolm X was born May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska his father was a baptist minister and both of his parents were members of the UNIA (United Negro Improvement Association). Nelson Mandela lost his father at the age of twelve, but wanted to contribute to the freedom struggle of his people that his ancestors fought for in the wars of resistance. Malcolm also lost his father, at the age of six his death remains a mystery. Malcolm X and his brothers and sisters moved with their mother, a few years later Malcolm’s mother suffered from a mental collapse. After the completion of high school he attended a university for blacks only, where he studied English, Anthropology, Politics, Native Administration and Roman Dutch Law.
