The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Donald Trump campaign, together, have raised a grand total of nearly $2.1 billion. A large percentage of this money comes from Super PACs and fundraising committees. The federal government should partake in limiting campaign funding, minimizing the usage of mass media during election periods, and controlling how wealth determines the outcome of the election.
The 2010 Supreme Court case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission dealt with a constitutional law about the regulations on corporate and union spending for campaigns. The federal government needs to step in and put a cap on how much social media can be used, for it does not prove who is the better candidate to run our country. Social media is being used only promote each candidate’s personal lives. Modern elections focus more on which candidate can bash the other the most and less on which candidate can do the best for our country. Elections are getting out of hand due to social media, and the government can play a large role in controlling it.
The past several presidential elections were decided not because of the most sufficient candidate, but because which candidate had the most money for their campaign. For example, in the 2008 election between Barack Obama and John McCain, Obama won the election because he raised nearly $800 million on the campaign while McCain raised only just short of $400 million. In the current election, Hillary Clinton has raised roughly $1.3 billion while Donald Trump is treading at around $800 million.
