A direct result from my enrollment in the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction program at the American College of Education was a drastic increase in my knowledge, competency, and confidence in my abilities as an educator. I have acquired the skills necessary to adapt and incorporate various teaching strategies within an ever-changing classroom environment. In addition, my curriculum expertise, content knowledge, pedagogical skills, teacher leadership, and mentoring skills have increased and I find that I am gaining new opportunities on my campus to use these skills to benefit my campus in it’s quest for increasing student achievement. Utilizing these tools centers the attention on the learners as opposed to the teachers. This method builds a relationship between the teachers and the students creating a connection with the school for the student, resulting in elements of Program Outcome 5, apply research-based principles to establish positive, safe, and secure student-centered learning environments (Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, 2014). As a result of participating my education at the American College of Education, I have become intrigued with problem-based learning. In order for a school wide literacy program to impact the literacy learning of all children, the program must receive support from all campus staff members, parents, and the community. Throughout my learning experience, I have developed the skills to apply research-based instructional strategies to develop literacy knowledge and skills in reading/language arts and all content areas, aligned with Program Outcome 7 (Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, 2014), and have participated in establishing a school-wide book study to occur on our campus.
