I lost the case. The words, although I knew it was going to happen, leave a bad taste in mouth. The town of Maycomb let Tom down, I let Tom down. I remember questioning him, hoping to let the jury hear his side and have them really listen. Actually listen.
“He says you a god-damn whore, I’ll kill ya.” This is what they needed to hear. Everyone knows Mr. Ewell is a bad man, and they needed to see he has the capability of hurting his daughter. Sadly, they refused to listen. When Tom explained what happened, what really happened, on November 21st, I knew he wasn’t lying. I would be able to tell-after years of reading people-if he was. Ewell is getting away with this and an innocent man is now in jail for something he didn’t do. From the testimonies it’s clear that Mayella is just afraid of her father. Frankly, I feel bad for her. I suspect he’s sexually abusing her and she can’t do anything about it. Mayella feels she can’t tell the truth because the town would just look the other way and the Ewell’s reputation would become worse than it already is. To me, the reason she started to sob is, not because it helped her case, but because she’s dealing with this alone and no one is going to help her. I wanted to give Maycomb a chance to see the world like I do. I may be called a “N***** Lover” but I don’t care. That shouldn’t be considered an insult. I like to love everyone equally because that’s what we are, equal. If I didn’t at least try to help Tom and help the town of Maycomb, I never would be able to hold my head up.
I thought for sure the jury would have some doubts of Tom raping Mayella when they saw his crippled left arm. Some of them had to see it, or did they just not want to? I made it clear to everyone that Mayella was bunged up on the right side of the face to show that Tom was innocent. How could the people of Maycomb still blindly believe that Tom raped her? I even showed the town that Mr. Ewell was left handed. The proof was all there. Maybe everyone, deep down, believed Tom did not rape Mayella. However, it’s very clear none of them had the strength to admit it.
Maycomb may only see colors, but they live in a colorless world. They are afraid of change and will forever always stick to the status quo. They always live their day to day lives not having a care, or even knowing, that the world is messed
