There are multiple functional issues that are hindering Megan Lister’s chances in having successful classroom management. Throughout the case study, Ms. Lister expressed her concern for following through with the lesson plans and remaining organized through the chaos in her classroom. Some examples of these behaviors are staying on schedule in reading groups, being on schedule while reading and effectively starting a lesson. Tuesday seem to be an issue for Ms. Lister because this is when some of her reading lesson is taken away by art class. This one would be beneficial for the review since most the class has an idea of the topic being discussed. Another way that can help Ms. Lister keep the attention of her students and remain on task is get the students involved by using different instructional medias and methods. One way that this method can be demonstrated as is the use of individual whiteboards. This can be a very effective tool to use to maintain the attention of the students because Ms. Lister is able to see that all the students are participating and see the answers each one of them had on the white board. As mentioned before, staying on schedule involves effectively starting a lesson on time. Ms. Lister attempted to start her social studies lesson and did notice that it was beginning a little bit late. Therefore, she needed to capture everyone’s attention to be able to start the lesson. With none of her students responding to her instruction, she needs to begin using different methods to attract the student’s attention to what she is saying. Lister’s classroom seems to have different distractions available to the students when such as the library corner/ reading center, their own person belongings (comic books, pencils, etc.), the pencil sharpener, and their own peers. By eliminating those distractions, the students will have to provide their full attention to Ms. Lister. This then leads into the concept of room arrangement and some strategies that can help Ms. Lister to improve her classroom. The students become very distracted when locations or objects are available to them at any moment. Therefore, during class/ lesson time Ms. Lister need to organize the room so that the students know when the certain locations or objects are available for them to use. For example, the library corner/ reading center could have a barrier or a schedule so the students know when the appropriate time us that space is. Also, this is not only a room arrangement idea, but a school safety concern when the drop-down world map came crashing down from one of the students. Ms. Lister needs to be aware of what is available in reach of the student and how she can actively make her classroom as accommodating as possible. Therefore, the world map situation could be avoided by not having the string available to the students.
