I am applying for a Mental Health Nursing Mater’s degree because I want to help people who suffer from mental illness. With the skills I have acquired whilst working as a support worker and whilst undergoing a pyschaitric clinical course and practical as a nursing student, I believe I will achieve my goal of being a mental health Nurse practitioner. I gained some insight into a mental health career whilst undergoing my clinical rotations in a big psychiatric hospital back in my home country of Nigeria. The role includes writing care plans, interacting with the patients as well as carrying out ward rounds with a group of healthcare professionals. I would like to expand my knowledge further at a degree level and possibly higher.
Working with the mental health population, historically, the focus has been on the deficits, the problem behaviors and pathologies. The shift has moved to a more holistic approach in development (Trout, Ryan, La Vigne, & Epstein, 2003). The approach is now strength based (Laursen, 2000) and building on the strengths of the client. According to the American Counseling Association, as a professional, it is the counselor’s responsibility to organize the delivery of service (counseling.org, 2015).
After completing my B.S in Community Human Services at Empire State College, I felt extremely fulfilled in my accomplishment. I felt like I did accomplish my ultimate goal which was becoming qualified to work with Juveniles in the system to help make a difference in their lives. I thought I could have been a unique asset to the system where I can be of assistance in problem solving alongside my affiliates and bosses working together in unison to accomplish the same goal, which is to be effective administrators to foster growth and productivity in the lives of the youths. However, I quickly learn or come to a realization that our children of tomorrow need more than just an attentive ear, a shoulder to lean on, and an empathetic individual. In

In primary care settings physicians have a significant role in mental health treatment and services (Hooper, 2014). and intrigued by the mind-body connection as well as the importance of human activity and occupation in maintaining mental and physical well-being. At the same time, my desire to work directly with people and be able to make a positive and lasting change to their lives by empowering them and helping discover their strengths and confidence in themselves to achieve their goals, led me to a realization that a career in occupational therapy would be a perfect fit for me. To me occupational therapy is a dynamic, rewarding, challenging, and inspiring field where I can fully realize my skills and knowledge. Having always been a firm believer in the patient-centric approach, I am passionate about providing excellent service to patients by improving their performance, preventing illness and disability and promoting adaptation to life
My educational goal to pursue a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Trauma and Crisis Counseling is a result of my personal life experiences and my admiration for those who work in this field, dedicated to helping those who may feel dragged down by toxic cycles and heavy memories, like myself once did, to create a life filled with meaning. As a Sociology major in my undergraduate career, I’ve always been interested in other people and why they operate the way that they do. It wasn’t long after earning my bachelors that I came to the belief that my past experiences and mental health journey could become my superpower to help others, and that if I wish for society to collectively feel better, then the focus on
Currently, I work for South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD). I am an Assessment and Career Exploration Specialist and also a Job Preparedness Instructor. While I enjoy my current role, I feel the need to carry out a more significant function in the rehabilitation process. I am seeking a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling because it is a requirement for the next step in my career. Well into the future, I envision myself in a leadership role within my current agency where I am able to advise on agency practices and service provision.
Counseling was the first attempt to freeing myself from the toxic mental prison. My mother had to drive me every other week to my appointments. She needed to know we were trying our best to make me better, so I was put on medication two pills. The one pill would help with my depression and work as a sleep aid. The second pill would help with my crying spells and flashbacks, PTSD.
Being raised in a household with two parents who have both worked in mental health and education, I knew I wanted to help the world in some way. I was not quite sure how yet, but I felt like it was my calling to somehow improve the lives of others. Throughout my life, I have heard both my mother and father tell me stories about the people they have helped, and that they knew when they left this earth, it was far more valuable to have improved the lives of others than to have made a lot of money not helping those around them. This led me to my first real step towards teaching.
When I was in middle school, I became interested in how the mind works and how people learn. My mom taught emotionally and intellectually disabled high school students, and when I was in the 8th grade, I shadowed her for a day. I was previously well-aware that teaching is a challenging career, but that day I realized the immense challenge of teaching children with special needs. In her math class of about 12 students, she had a broad range of academic abilities from students who could not count to students who were able to do simple multiplication. Therefore, I learned that it is difficult for these students to receive the instruction they need because they are all on different levels.
No matter what, science has always been one of my favorite subjects. Additionally, the human body has never failed to spark my curiosity. To elucidate, my interest in the human brain and mental health has encouraged me to look further into the schematics of the mind. In the same way, it has just been fascinating to see how one small thing can completely change the structure of someone's mind. In spite of everyone being unique in their own way, most people would assume everyone’s brain is wired the same way, nevertheless, that is hardly ever the case.
