One of the biggest reasons I am pursuing a degree in social work is because of the hardships and challenges I faced during my childhood and newfound adulthood. I personally have had my own struggles with mental health and finding the right help and guidance that I needed at the time was extremely crucial to me. As my mental health declined, my school performance was affected. My parents made the decision that consulting a therapist would be beneficial and a wise course of action for guidance when faced with similar circumstances in the future. My therapist was able to assist me in recognizing the warning signs of these panic attacks and offered me suggestions and direction for what to do if they reoccurred. As a result, these therapists were able to assist me in improving my academic performance and helped me with controlling my anxiety. I was motivated by this event and realized I too wanted to assist those going through similar experiences. I learned more about the biological underpinnings of mental health and the environmental variables that impact mental health with every class. Each class contributed to my understanding and reaffirmed my goal of working as a mental health therapist in the near future. I found it fascinating to explore all of the courses that cover the mind and how mental health is impacted by a number of different things. I feel that I have learned a great amount about the topic, but I still want to study more in order to be as knowledgeable as I can about the subject.
