Generation Y: The Oldest Generation In The Workplace

Introduction
A general consensus is developed that Americans who are currently in their working age fall into four categories namely Traditionalists, baby boomers, Generation X and Generation Y.
The Traditional generation is the oldest generation in the workplace, although most are now retired. Also known as the veterans, the Silent generation, the matures, the greatest generation, this generation includes individuals born before 1945, and some sources place the earliest birth year to 1922 (Tolbize, 2008). According to the US census Bureau baby boomers are defined as those individuals who born between 1946 and 1964. Similarly, US Bureau define Generation X as the segment of population consisting of those persons who are born between 1968 and 1979. Their attitude towards work is easy going. The employers need to change their ways to provide guidance to these young people and helping them get settled in their career. The greatest strengths the millennial generation has offered in the workplace are:
• They are more technology savvy. They are highly skilled in operating different systems.
• They tend to have great networking and social skills
• They appreciate diversity and easily adapt the diverse workplaces as compare to their older generations.
• This generation shows more enthusiasm and ambition towards their work
• They follow their passion and turn out to be entrepreneurs.
• They are innovating, creative and find smarter ways to complete the work.
The greatest weaknesses of the millennial generation at the workplace are:
• They demand praise, motivation and recognition more than any other generation
• They have over self esteem.
• They are impatient and are in hurry to get success.
• They have less capacity to face the criticism
• They are less hard
