The position I take on law enforcement mirroring that of its population is. Seeing a familiar face is always better than seeing a stranger. Just going off personal experience I related and was a little easier on African American police officers than that of their white counterparts. I think that a stigma comes from African Americans and the dealings with white police officers just, off what the past has shown us. It becomes a norm in the African American community “when you see a white officer be nervous” that is a mentality that has beaten in to us literally and figuratively. Just the opposite occurs when you see an officer that shares your color you feel that you can then relate.
As the book says and I believe whole heartily form mine and others experience. “African American officers will have a better credibility in a predominantly black neighborhood than a white officer, leading to better community police relations and a better ability to solve and prevent crime”. That quote applies to all the communities the Spanish in Humboldt Park, the Asians in Chinatown. When it comes to women one barrier is the physical aspect of the training and the job itself. Women are generally weaker than men and that could cause a problem when dealing with male assailants. Men police officers often make it harder for women to show and prove their strengths because, they are men and think a women cannot handle certain situations. The book also discusses another barrier, which is women are not often put in higher positions. Which does not give new women officers any mentors to look for and turn to. This fact usually can lead to another sub problem women may face when only being able to turn to man and that is sexual
