The Importance of the Mockingjay The author of the Hunger Games trilogy, Suzanne Collins, once said “I don’t write about adolescence. I write about war. For adolescents.” In the books, the mockingjay represented war, but has so much more significance in regard to the characters and the plot. With the Capitol controlling the districts, war is bound to occur, especially with all of the starving and malnourished people in the districts that have no aid. This creation is a key foundation for the series to move forward and evolve into something more meaningful. It's existence was supposed to never occur. Jabberjays were created in the war and were after left to die but then mated with another species to create the mockingjay that was originally meant to die. Also in the 74th hunger games a detail in the arena was turned against the capitol. Katniss and Rue used the bird to relay messages which game makers never planned the birds to be used for. It was through the birds that With Rue’s death Katniss was able create a feeling of discontent in the districts and give Rue’s death meaning. In the sense that the Jabberjay is suppose to die, Katniss who is like a Jabberjay in the story is also supposed to die. Snow threatens to kill her family and friends if she doesn't subdue to rebellion in the districts but isn't able to and so the rebellions continue. Katniss keeps outsmarting the capitol throughout the story, another example is the berries in the 74th games which forced the capitol to keep both alive and started the rebellion. While with rebellion violence is sure to follow, but safety can be found in those with the symbol. The mockingbird is the rebellion symbol and so those with it that are not from the capitol are part of the rebellion. One example of trusting those with the symbol is with the two girls running from district 8 to 13, with them they carry a bread wafer with the symbol on it and it's that symbol that
