Moral and Ethical People – Heart of a Profession
Throughout time, the U.S. Army has changed and adapted in many ways, but it has always kept its value in remaining a profession. A profession is different from a job in a few ways. First of all, a profession is usually a long term commitment, where the individual continues to work on their craft and strives to eventually master those skills. Another important difference is the aspect of ethics. A profession is usually performed in the interest of others, like a doctor or military service member, which requires the need to be guided by a set of ethical rules. It continues to state that unlike other professions, the Profession of Arms sometimes has to apply lethal force in order to provide peace and security of the United States and its citizens. This leads into a discussion of proposed foundational attributes that a profession and a professional within our organization should embody. “Trust” is the single attribute that shared both by the profession and the professional as necessary attribute. Trust is key because it is the glue that holds everything together. The citizens trust the Army leadership, the Army leaders trust it's officers and NCOs, and they in turn trust its Soldiers and the trust works up the chain as well.
This trust has to be the foundation within the our culture and all of us as professional as equally as responsible in working together to ensure that trust is not tarnished. Essential to building and maintaining that trust are ethical and moral values. We apply these fundamental principles, like the Warrior Ethos, in our everyday decision making process. These values have to be instilled in our character in order to ensure the trust continues to exist at all levels and the relationship between the citizens and the military continues to remain
