Moral Standards In Law Enforcement

One would think higher moral standards would substantiate police officers and other agents working in law enforcement to make good decisions to building community trust. This is necessary because people in this profession are expected to demonstrate and practice doing the right thing at all times. Unfortunately in the American society some police officers have been called out for misconduct and brutality. As a result of carrying out bad behavior people in the general public have very little trust for law enforcers. If higher moral standard represents the relationship and interactions between police officers and citizens, then officers need to be held to the same moral standards as other citizens which are to know the difference between right and wrong and choosing the right human behavior as it relate to moral principles. They know there are dangers and risks that come with the job. The police should work to make a difference that the public demands and expects of them to be. People working in law enforcement need to lead by example instead of setting bad ones; they should be required to meet higher moral standards in the sense of their personal behavior toward others. If police officers are held at a higher moral standard, then they must follow them at all times. I am in agreement with the idea of standards put in place to convict an officer if caught breaking the law, they should not be excused for their wrong behavior. A police officer who has committed a crime should not be allowed to enforce the law. It is an abuse of power when an officer put their own interest above others because they are given the authority. Law enforcement is an organized system whereas individuals working in this type of job must make the hard choices to do the right thing under every circumstance in order to make a difference in the lives of
