Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a method of intervention which seeks to make clients resolves the uncertainty in their lives in favour of making positive changes. It is a method that originates from the field of psychology which was designed as a tool to work with clients experiencing alcohol related problems (Teater 2014,). MI has also been described by (Anne 2014) as a cognitive behavioural method that seeks to inspire clients describes the motive behind their quest for change of behaviour. Showing empathy is significant to MI approach to work; clients will express more of their feelings when they felt some kind of connection and understanding with the social worker. The second principle of MI is for the social worker to develop a discrepancy; this means social worker will assist the client to value this importance change by showing the inconsistency in relation to how the client lives currently and how they want their lives to be in the near future this is to be a source of motivation (Cole 2012). Other principles mentioned by (Jones-smith 2015) include avoiding argument with clients and the social worker choosing wisely the words to use whilst not focusing on the problem or labelling the client. Rolling with resistance is also mentioned by (Jones-smith 2015) which means social worker avoid confrontation with the clients as clients could blame their behaviour on something or someone else. Social worker will work by recognizing client argument or viewpoint. The final principle of MI is for social worker to support the self-efficacy of the client. This client self efficacy will improve if the social worker evokes and support clients hope, confidence and likelihood of the change that is sought will happen.
