Is this murder an act of justice, or revenge? In the story “Bargain”, there is a store owner named Mr.Baumer who is always pushed around and beat up by a man who drinks too much and can’t read and goes by the name of Slade. Mr. Baumer then takes an act to get back at Slade for all those time Slade beat Mr.Baumer up. Mr.Baumer’s act of revenge, is murder. There are many theories about if Mr.Baumer was really responsible for Slades death, but what Mr. Baumers town really think is, that Mr. Baumer is responsible for Slade’s death. One reason that Mr. Baumer was responsible for Slade’s death, is that Mr. Baumer was provoked several times by Slade, and very annoyed by him. Baumer is responsible for Slade’s death, is that he takes advantage of the fact that Slade can’t read. In the end of the book, Mr. Baumer says, “ Al. It is good to know to read.” What Mr. Baumer is giving a hint of, is that he took advantage of Slade’s ability to read. Slade was found frozen in his cart traveling back from delivering packages elsewhere. They thought he froze to death, but then with further investigation, they found an empty bottle of wood alcohol next to Slade. Mr. Baumer bought wood alcohol and left it for Slade. Knowing that Slade is an alcoholic, and he can’t read, Mr. Baumer intentionally gave it to slade and Slade just drank it just thinking it was normal whiskey. Now people may not believe this and say that Mr. Baumer is not responsible for Slade’s death, but in the story, it says, “ The barrel was the last thing to go in… and I said, Mr.Baumer, we will never sell all of this.” This is the point in the story where Al (Mr. Baumer’s associate) figures out that Mr. Baumer just bought wood alcohol to kill Slade! The last reason that Mr. Baumer is responsible for Slade’s death, is that there was no reason to buy a barrel of wood alcohol, and everyone knows that no one uses it because there are not any cars yet invented. In the story, Mr. Baumer says, “ Sure we sell it. I get it cheap.” Mr. Baumer is know trying to cover up that he will just sell it fast. He is trying to hide that he actually killed Slade and is never going to sell wood
