Music Educator Goals

It was not until my Junior year of high school that I realized that I wanted to become an educator. As I was attending the Southwestern Oklahoma Band Directors Association All-Region Honor Band, Dr. Michael Raiber, the Chair for Music Education at Oklahoma City University, was our clinician, and he told everyone at the honor band his story of why he still teaches music. His story revolved around when he was teaching during the tragedies that occurred on September 11th of 2001. While I already loved music and wanted to continue on with it throughout the rest of my life, his story and his passion in teaching music led me to wanting to become an educator myself. 6 11 13 I personally believe that Characteristic 6 which says that a “... teacher possesses content knowledge and can create learning experiences to ensure that all learners attain mastery of concepts” is important in my role as a music educator. As I progress through my music theory classes, my eyes become open to many different ways to teach theory and be able to have the students involved in the lessons. As I see how myself and peers work together as well, I see even more ways of approaching lessons, because what may have worked to help me understand a subject in class may not work for other students. Within my classroom, I want to be able to respect the differences in between my students and help them in any way possible. If one of my students is struggling in class, I can spend extra time helping them or find another student to help them and create a new approach to the topic for the student. I learned about this throughout high school in the manner of what the teacher says may not make sense, but what another student says very well can. I also know that students all learn in a different way, so to cater to all these different learning styles, I can combine the use of visual, aural, and kinesthetic techniques to help my
