On April 21, 1930, I arrived at Eastham Prison after being arrested for the second time. Life was unbearable there for me and I became desperate to get out. Hoping that if I was physically incapacitated I might get transferred out of Eastham, I asked a fellow prisoner to chop off some of my toes with an axe. We were found by the police and a shootout took place, and Blanche, my brother’s wife, ran out of the door screaming and was picked up after the Shootout, during our getaway. Although the police did not capture Bonnie and me that day, we made a detrimental mistake. They found a treasure trove of information left in the apartment, most notably, rolls of undeveloped film, which, once developed, revealed the now-famous images of Bonnie and me in various poses holding guns. In Dexter, Iowa, the gang and I needed to rest. We stopped at the Dexfield Park recreation area. A farmer alerted the police of our presence. Bonnie saw the police approaching and screamed. This alerted Buck and me to start shooting. This Shootout is when Buck got killed and Blanche got captured.
