Leaders are not born or chosen, they are made. Most people consider themselves leaders due to the fact they are elected to be them. Unfortunately, these elected leaders are only given the position due to their physical skills not their leadership skills. For instance, the captain of a certain soccer team may be captain solely because he can score goals gracefully and with ease, not because he knows how to motivate his team and lead them in the right direction. I was elected captain of our school’s color guard team almost immediately after I entered High School. As an incoming freshman, my leadership skills were meek and underdeveloped. Fortunately, all of that would come to an end soon.

My words echoed in the gym. My team members, wide-eyed, looked at each other with a blank face. They obviously thought my idea to be blasphemous. I reassured them it would be both fun and effective, and they reluctantly followed my lead. My goal was to improve the dynamics in the group and strengthen our bond as a team. I knew my team was skillful with the flags and sabres, as a matter of fact, we had been recognized before for our impeccable technique. This of which made it even stranger for us to be falling behind. I came to the realization that my team was good at their technique, alone. Their teamwork was lacking, and that proved itself to be a problem for us. I spent the rest of the week assigning team bonding activities.
