My Experience At The Summerfield United Methodist Church

Sacrosanctum Concilium’s purpose is what Vatican II wanted to do to bring the life of the Church up to date and it did so by increasing the vigor of Christian life, adapting to current needs, and a unity of Christianity and of all humanity with one another. I attended The Summerfield United Methodist Church on East Juneau Avenue downtown with a friend that is a big participant there and she introduced me to her Pastor Ada Rosado. While attending the service I was able to experience my first Christian service which was incredibly stimulating. I was able to observe the various roles that members of the community play in their worship service and how it connected them closer to God. During the Church service, I realized music brought everyone really close to each other and brought out many emotions. By singing the word of God they were able to make him present within the Church. People in the service would sing happily for God and for each other because they believed that Christ was with them at that point. In SC they state the reason when He is present, “Christ is always present in His Church, especially in her liturgical celebrations,” (SC 7). This is also a good example of how the council wanted the liturgy to adapt to the culture and traditions of people. As long as the service followed its traditional sense of the liturgy and its practice they were able to use music in order for their service. In SC 37, it confirms the idea of adapting to cultures, “The Church has no wish to impose a rigid uniformity in matters which do not implicate the faith or the good of the whole community.” In other words, if the culture and tradition of a group of people are to sing the liturgy, then they are allowed to do so as long as it stays with the true and authentic spirit of the …show more content…

One of the youth leaders says how he shows the youth to live a responsible and righteous life around God which shows us how we adapt to current needs by understanding each other’s positions in how we live in today’s world. We are meant to worship God not individually or silently but rather as a group. We have to be as involved as possible in understanding the rites and prayers that they part in. I observed this when everyone in the service was voluntarily singing along with each other as a community. The choir was singing in harmony with the lead singer and the rest of the community and they offered themselves to God to take their faithfulness and acceptance of
