Army defines leadership as “influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation, while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.” As a professional Non-Commissioned officer, proudly serving in the United State Army and within the boundary that clearly depicts vivid picture of Army Leadership. I am SGT Mostafazadeh define and develop my first Leadership Philosophy and most importantly use it in the daily bases and maintain revision and update it as I develop and learn new thing throughout my Military Carrere. The core philosophical value of my life is displayed through human equality and equal rights. As a young advocate for equality for all, it is the core of who I am and therefore a philosophy of hope that I seek. My mission is to utilize my voice constructively for the betterment of myself, my family, and society. I sense that when we as a collective whole work for the betterment of everyone, the whole can achieve great heights.
Leadership Self-Assessment The definition of leadership is, “the process of influencing people to accomplish goals,” (Huber, 2014, p.4). There are three main leadership styles according to Clark (2004), autocratic, democratic, and free reign. The results of the leadership style survey showed that I have a democratic leading style (Clark, 2004). In democratic leadership, the leader helps to facilitate discussions and the decision making process (Huber, 2014).
I define a leader as a person who has not only the ability but also the willingness to endure the hardships others may not be capable of handling. Leaders not only inspire others to achieve goals that seem impossible but manage to get others to work together in achieving these set goals for the betterment of themselves and the mission. Respect, communication, and teamwork are the pillars that I believe most align with my leadership style. Respect is an important part of the foundation as a leader as you are responsible for promoting an environment of safety and growth. Communication is key, without it you are not taking into consideration the issues your members could be having.
1. I define leadership as one’s ability to unite a diverse team of individuals to achieve a shared goal or mission. I find my leadership style to be backed by three main tenants; these include compassion, commitment, and trust. The foundation of my philosophy is to care for those who work for and with me and to have a genuine investment in their well-being. I believe a good leader should want to get to know their people beyond just their job title.
Something I was repetitively told in elementary school is the importance of being a leader, and everyday I am thankful that I listened to my teachers back then. I can honestly say at the time it was just something drilled into my mind like math or reading but I did not completely understand what it really meant; however, today I can confidently say that I fully understand what it means to posses this quality. Because I demonstrate dependability and integrity in extracurricular roles, industriousness and human compassion while planning events for my current high school, and character through volunteering, I embody the quality that is leadership. Leadership is a quality that is reflected in many aspects of life. Whether it's a job career, a club, social grouping, to simply just a qualification that represents a person's personality. Leadership is an idolized trait to have, it gives a sense of satisfaction to be looked at with the responsibility that a leader would hold. A leader is someone we look up to, someone that can push people for a common goal. It's a lot of responsibility to hold, its alot of judgement and it takes certain type of personality to successfully hold all the good and negatives that come with being a leader.
When giving an leadership philosophy, it is important that one implement these given characteristics into their life. While illustrating this manner, a leader must also act as a motivator and disciplinarian, especially when leading teachers. In conclusion, leadership is the ability to retain the confidence of others. By doing so, a leader would be able to follow their own willingness to take their suggestions on the matter of any given situation. Through its contrasting definitions and beliefs, a leadership philosophy will always illustrate a worldview of leadership, include leadership practices, build on leadership relationships, and include a diversity as to how you would assort your leadership skills and most importantly, an assessment of an effective
1. My philosophy of leadership is about collaboration and teamwork. Respecting and treating everyone the same, is key to supporting a good team atmosphere. I believe when a leader puts effort and care into assisting others, then their peers and followers will naturally want to support them. It is also important for a leader to recognize, that advocacy must never become so important that the critical elements of leadership are neglected (e.g. policy enforcement, command support, etc...).
Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.
From my point of view , Leadership has more to it than I can possibly imagine. I define leadership as the art of enabling a group of people get to a specific destination. As a leader your main focus was to enable your followers lead theselves. As i think deeper i realise a person cannot choose to be a leader. I think a lot of the time people take on leadership positions without knowing.
Through self-reflection and academic readings, I have discovered that I identify with three different leadership theories. During the first meeting in a Strength Based Leadership class, we were asked to write our leadership history. The class then began an ongoing exploration of various leadership theories. Upon reviewing my leadership history from the first class and synthesizing the information from the theories that were examined, I discovered that I most resonate with the Trait Leadership Theory, the Skills Leadership Theory, and the Path-Goal Leadership theory. These theories are leader focused, describing the process and techniques a leader uses to accomplish goals.
My leadership philosophy is one driven by emotion. I want to be the leader that makes people feel. I want them to feel as though we are all part of a family and that they are cared about. I want to show them that I not only care about our job at hand but care about them personally; where their physical and mental health is always as important as reaching any goal.
