For my Learning Strategies Reflections assignment I choose the cooperative learning that took place in a high school history class. Throughout the years the cooperative learning approach has been very effective to get children to engage with their peers while learning academic curriculum. In the history class video recording, the cooperative learning was the main approach for the teacher’s lesson plan. Cooperative learning is “An instructional approach in which students work together in groups to achieve learning goals” (Ryan, Cooper, & Bolick, 2016). The teacher then had the students begin to work as a group utilizing the cooperative learning method to re-read and discuss their comprehension of the reading text that was assigned the evening prior. The teacher then prompted the students to think about what it means to be a human being. Once the students were able to develop an analysis of the story from their assignment and their peers input about the story the students then would begin to use critical thinking. Cooperative learning has several strategies that exist, critical thinking and problem solving are two of the many.(Ryan, Cooper, & Bolick, 2016). In the literature class when reading and analyzing different types of writing, the teacher would then give students the options of splitting into small groups of three to four students. Once, the students are broken into small groups the students then would proceed to discuss reading passages from their literature homework the evening prior. Then the students discuss the meaning behind the literature piece, why the author describes particular parts in the passage the way he does, the cultural back ground in the literature, and their peers input. This group assignment would help the students not only work with their peers to understand the passage written in the literature piece but they would also be able to discuss their peer’s comprehension of the article. Because all the students would be giving their comprehension of the writing the learning strategy would also include the students peers input due to different learning styles. Though cooperative learning experience can be very effective it is important that the groups are broken up in groups based on the students learning abilities. Breaking up the students based upon their academic level will elevate a student feeling over burdened with work while another feels left out because they do not understand at the same ability as their peers.
