What is Nursing?

Being a nurse is more than just caring for and helping people. Nurses have many duties and obligations such as administering medications safely, performing appropriate procedures and following provider’s orders. As a nurse, I must care for individuals that are vulnerable and dependent on others and have compassion towards people in need. I must build trusting relationships with patients to make them feel safe, comforted, and important. With trust, patients will let me know more into their issues and life. In nursing, it is important to be able to effectively talk to patients in a way that they understand. Nurses need to be able to master both effective communication and technical skills of the job to be successful.

I volunteer in events in the Iowa City community. Once specific time I volunteered for a FTK Day, to raise money for Dance Marathon. Being there, raising money for children was an amazing experience. I got to spend the afternoon with the kids, they can always make me laugh. My favorite part was when the kids got to paint our faces because they really enjoy it, and they are who we are there for. I am passionate about helping individuals who need it and I want to make a difference in someone’s life everyday throughout my nursing career. Volunteering has been very rewarding by opening my eyes to the needs of others and making me a better person. This shows my compassion and drive to help anyone in need, which are important qualities for nurses. Working with others who care about people as much as I do is rewarding because we enjoy what we are doing and know we are making a difference in the lives of people in the community. I enjoy being able to give my free time to people who need it.
Something else I do for this community is donate plasma, giving others a chance. I do my best to be a helping member of this community and every community I live in. I strive to make a difference every day. Whether doing something as simple as picking up something someone dropped or sharing a smile with a stranger. Through all this, I have learned I can make a difference in so many little ways that change so many lives in big
