My Writing Class Reflection

This class has led me to become a better writer in a number of ways. In the use of a number of activities throughout the course, I was truly able to discover the writer that was and the writer I wanted to become by the end of the summer. This course also introduced me to a number of useful writing strategies that helped to improve my writing style. Finally, this class taught me to become a versatile writer capable of writing in different genres of essay writing. Upon completion of this class, I will finish as a more well-round writer equipped with a number of writing strategies that allow me to take my writing to the next level. The writer’s profile assignment allowed me to determine the type of writer that I was entering the class. Through my connection with the quote by William Goyen, I was able to metaphorically correlate his words with my writing philosophy. Though I have written various types of expository essays in previous years, this course allowed me to grasp the specific writing concepts that apply to each genre type. For example, while drafting the persuasive essay, I was introduced to a methodical outline to follow for this type of assignment. In the introduction, the writer catches the attention of the reader, explains the topic, and presents a thesis statement. The paragraphs that make up the body of the essay all follow the same format: state an argument in support of your theses, acknowledge a counter argument, and respond to said counter argument by bringing your paragraph back around to your main argument.
