The style of a genre comprises several elements: sentence structure, pronoun usage, and tone. The sentence structure for statistical reports is long in length and is complex. Examples of sentence structure in Bohrnstedt et. al(2015):
In the above passage, the terms, NAEP and Common Core of Data, are used by experts in the discipline. The number of words use in this sentence is 45 which make this sentence long and complex. Chen(2015):
As seen above, the i.e. notation is complex because the general public does not know the meaning of this notation. The term STEM is used by the educated audience in a college setting which is not a common word for the general public. The vocabulary for the statistical reports uses words, terms, or phrases experts in the discipline would know. As seen before in audience section of this genre analysis, the vocabulary is for experts to communicate with other experts in the field. Vocabulary is formal because no use of first person pronoun or third person pronouns is present in the reports, but the author uses the report to spread information to the readers instead of relying on the author’s opinion.
The most important element of style is tone. Tone is based off of the other element in style. The tones for statistical reports are objective, pragmatic, and didactic. The tone is objective because no use first person pronouns and statistical report use logos as their main persuasive point. The tone is pragmatic because the author lets the report rely the information instead of the author’s opinion on the data and format being easy to skim by the use of bullet points and table of content. The tone is didactic because the purpose and content provide the topics or question that will be answer by the statistical report and pathos evokes the emotion of curiosity.
