In this essay, a SWOT analysis will be explored to reflect, critique and identify my leadership potentials in practice. A SMART development plan will be formulated to improve my leadership skills as it is important to the changes in the NHS improvement plan (NHS Improvement, 2017). The concept of leadership and theories as well as evidence-based approaches and strategies will also be discussed. Finally, there will be a reflection on my leadership style. The rationale for this topic has been influenced by recent discussions on the change in attitudes to leadership styles which reflects on compassionate leadership to improve quality NHS patient care (Sherring, 2012; Foster, 2017).

In the NHS, (Hersey et al., 2013) states that leadership and management although unique, they both focuses on different areas to achieve goals such as high-quality care, fewer patient complaints, better productivity and higher clinical governance. Kristiansen et al., (2016) are of the view that leadership is relationship-oriented, focusing on the ability to create change and work toward a common vision, whereas management is about controlling complexity, systems and structures in an effort to bring order and consistency (see appendix). With the current complex, turbulent, chaotic and rapidly changing healthcare environment, leadership and management may be credible to ensure an effective use of resources (Huber, 2017). Evidence suggests that the balance of management and leadership will embody a forward action commitment and use of power to bring about innovation, encourage effective communication in respecting the principles of diversity and equality and working in multidisciplinary teams to achieve goals (Grimm, 2010; Holm and Severinsson,
