This type of leadership seeks a multiple disciplined effort of all stakeholders to lead an organization, but leaders such as managers and upper management are ultimately responsible for the final decision making (Borkowski, 2009). This facility exemplifies this model with the president and department heads having monthly town hall meetings with employees, to communicate openly and candidly in a friendly environment to discuss ideas ways to improve this organization (ABC Healthcare Center,
Leadership Response Paper Kimberly A. McCullough LED501 Leadership & Management June 4, 2018 Dr. Jacqueline Taggart Colorado Christian University Abstract Our society depends on the abilities of our leaders and how well they can do their jobs. A leader is someone that many people look to for direction, guidance, and inspiration, so it is important for our leaders to have the aptitude to make difficult decisions and to know and do what is right for the people. In today’s healthcare business world, leadership is a vital role and it also very important to have great leaders in our lives and our jobs.
Leadership Style Paper Leaders are the foundation for any successful organization. Good leaders set a positive tone to direct workers in accomplishing the vision of the healthcare establishment. Nursing leaders delegate, dictate, guide staff, and assist those to achieve their highest potential (ANA, n.d.). The purpose of this paper is to discuss leadership, followership, and analyze results from a followership style test and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Description of Leadership and Followership Styles Good leadership is crucial for any healthcare facility and those that have traits of leadership skills will maximize productivity for the business and shape a positive culture, promoting a healthy working atmosphere for followers.
Leadership and staffing are recognized as important factors for quality of patient care. A positive work environment will increase job satisfaction and staff retention. After interviewing Christine Smith, I believe her leadership style would be labeled as a consensus manager, which is the most transformative leadership style, and is shown to have a positive influence on the quality of patient care.
Leadership styles are a vital component in strong and effective nursing leadership. These leadership styles consist of transformational leadership, charismatic leadership, transactional leadership, autocratic leadership, and passive avoidant leadership and each of these leadership styles consists of different components which has the potential to positively or negatively affect nursing leadership as a whole. Leaders in nursing have the duty to create and preserve a work environment which not only encourages positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses. Leadership style has been recognized as a huge contributing factor in creating a positive work environment, leading to improved recruitment and maintenance
When most people think of a leader, they picture the president of a club or an organization. However, it is my belief that a good leader is actually just a good person who leads by example, rather than any other authority. In this context, I satisfy the leadership requirement for the NHS. As I have mentioned before, I have always been ready to help others. Not only am I ready to help as an individual, I am also able to work well with a team.
In the NHS, (Hersey et al., 2013) states that leadership and management although unique, they both focuses on different areas to achieve goals such as high-quality care, fewer patient complaints, better productivity and higher clinical governance. Kristiansen et al. , (2016) are of the view that leadership is relationship-oriented, focusing on the ability to create change and work toward a common vision, whereas management is about controlling complexity, systems and structures in an effort to bring order and consistency (see appendix). With the current complex, turbulent, chaotic and rapidly changing healthcare environment, leadership and management may be credible to ensure an effective use of resources (Huber, 2017). Evidence suggests that the balance of management and leadership will embody a forward action commitment and use of power to bring about innovation, encourage effective communication in respecting the principles of diversity and equality and working in multidisciplinary teams to achieve goals (Grimm, 2010; Holm and Severinsson,
Therefore, leaders should be responsible for meeting employees where they are, rather than vice versa. I plan to implement this theory by spending some time with employees and colleagues to get a better understanding of their needs for growth and improvement. After this I would create a plan that points out areas for improvement and better engagement and would follow that. One quintessential task for healthcare leaders is relaying the big picture and simplifying complexities for employees. This resonates with me because I am actually very good at articulating things in different ways for people to fully understand them.
Introduction Effective leadership by professionals is crucial in all healthcare organizations. The way workers define leadership has changed from generation to generation, however, a common description of leadership is the motivating behavior of an individual directing the activities of a group towards a shared goal. (Ward, 2017) Influencing group activities and coping with change are some of the key aspects that an individual in a leadership role will be working towards. According to an article, "management is about coping with complexity" and "leadership is about coping with change", therefore, both aspects are critical to a successful leader.
Wong (2015) addresses that 50% of studies that have addressed patient outcomes found clinical leadership to be at fault for morbidity, mortality, and increased hospital stays versus the primary condition of the patient. Transformational leadership was found to be a key leadership theory in decreasing patient adverse events, such as from medication errors and hospital acquired infections (Wong, 2015). The results from these studies determined that transformational leadership contributes to a healthy work environment by boosting staff support, open and honest communication, and trust, which promotes positive team working relationships (Wong,
Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
Leaders are able to see a problem and fix it, to achieve the mission that the organization has. In addition, leaders are able to communicate effectively with their staff, and they are able to motivate them. Overall, leaders have a plan to achieve the mission and keep the staff working together. Leaders need to be honest and have a positive attitude towards everything they do. If I want to become the best healthcare administrator I would need to become more efficient, and have the ability to find solutions to the everyday problems.
Introduction: Any organization recognizes the significance of leadership and its crucial role in achieving their goals and success. In healthcare organizations, the complexity of the system and the difference in defining its success goals are reshaping the practice of leadership and its standards. According to House et al. (2002, p.5) a leader is able to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute to the success of the organization or task. Healthcare and business settings are different in terms of goals and system contexts.
Healthcare is a complex industry and these skills are essential to a smoothly run system. For instance, leadership skills are considered very important because good leaders are able to be authoritative but also have an interpersonal relationship with the people they are mentoring or leading (Cushing, 2016). This creates a positive work environment and enhances quality of care given to patients. Furthermore, a well-rounded leader in the health care industry will create opportunities for their employees and introduce them to challenges while also supporting them though the situation (Cushing, 2016). Also, a skill incorporated into leadership that can be connected to management is the change factor of healthcare.
Topic Part 1: Is shared and distributed leadership the only way forward for leadership within the current health and care context? Part 1 Introduction- Statement about Leadership Yukl(2010) defined Leadership as the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives. Winston and Patterson (2006) stated leadership aimed to identify the diversity of their followers in order to achieve goals and can provide some support, training and education to the followers to help them to improve their abilities within the organization’s goals and resources to ensure the goals can be reached.
