New York University’s fervor to educate future leaders of tomorrow, its dedication to advance the frontiers of scientific research, and its commitment to create a diverse, thriving community–these philosophies are what inspire me to attend NYU.
Climate change is one of the most severe problems our global community faces, and already, populations from around the world are vulnerable to issues of water sanitation, food shortages, and security risks. Through my experience leading Give Hope with Soap – a global service initiative providing clean water to the people of Malawi, Africa – I discovered nearly thirty-three percent of the world’s population lives without access to freshwater. Even worse, by 2025, two-thirds of the planet could suffer from freshwater shortages. By engaging both Tandon faculty members and students, I hope to not only develop a solid foundation in the basic sciences and mathematics, but also to utilize my newfound knowledge developing solutions that promote the purification and usability of clean water. However, I recognize enhancing water quality will not only require innovation, but market-driven solutions. Therefore, I am interested in participating in NYU’s Social Entrepreneurship Program to combine the fields of engineering and social entrepreneurship. This synergy will not only generate unique ideas, but will enable public-private partnerships to enact these solutions throughout communities worldwide. More specifically, I hope to ensure groundbreaking research is translated into technology that can assist those communities most impacted by damaged water
