I thoroughly remember the day he made his first appearance in the hallways of Yale high school. That day is stuck in my mind on repeat because I look back at it, quite often, to evaluate just how far the kid pantsing children at their lockers has come. The subject of my story is a young boy that, for personal reasons, will go by the name of Roger. Roger is a foster child who has undeniably experienced the effects of drugs, alcohol, and gangs and their effect on families. His bad actions on school grounds were an unquestionable cry for the attention he had never received. Once I heard about Roger and everything he had been through from my brother, who is in Roger’s class, the words “invite him over” spilled out of my mouth. I couldn’t help but help, and looking back, I wouldn’t change a single thing. From what I’ve been told, his father has never been in the picture and his brothers were heavily involved in gang activity. They tried to bring theses activities around Roger’s home and when drugs and alcohol came into the mix, Roger’s mom put him in a foster home in an effort to protect him. Currently, he is in the home of a hard working family who is rarely home. Roger’s new family is able to provide him with things he has never had such as, a nice home and stability. But one thing was missing from his life before Roger became a part of my family. The one thing he has obviously always longed for;
