Gazing up at the blue summer sky, I inhaled my last sweet breath of adolescence. Draped in my white cap and gown I took a slow motion glance around me in an attempt to soak in every moment of this precious day: graduation. With my closest friends jetting off around the country to go to college I could not help but feel a tinge of jealousy sprinkled with an overwhelming sense of being a pariah- for I was doing the unspeakable, and heading fifteen minutes down the road to our local community college. After taking a semester off, and working almost every single day to save money, I began taking classes. At first, I had this idea that I was going to be a Dental Hygienist, but, as I said before, I was caught up in this cycle of doing things that looked good on paper rather than finding what actually interested me. To no avail, I was not a fan of the classes it took to get into the Dental Hygiene program, so I changed my major. About 5 times. Thankfully only once officially. I looked into massage therapy, physical therapy, teaching, nutrition, psychology, holistic medicine, pediatrics; pretty much anything in the realm of healing and helping people I have played with the idea of encompassing as my passion. I have always been an observer; being sure to learn from others’ mistakes rather than make my own. However, as the years have passed and I have been growing on my own as an individual I have found that I am someone worthy of being in the spotlight; what I have to say is in fact important, and I am here to make an impact. Growing up, my parents made sure to instill a sense of freedom in all of us kids, they made sure that it was known that we can accomplish anything we put our minds to as long as we want it bad enough, and are grateful for every opportunity that is presented to us. I was lucky enough to have parents that understood our individualism, and I feel that this non-judgemental culture within our family has allowed me to flourish internally. I now do things to make myself proud and I, alone, expect the best of myself and refuse to settle for anything less. I am prepared to apply myself wholeheartedly to the University of Washington’s Communication program, and do whatever it takes to graduate at the top of my class. It might take one person to change the world, but I am going to change the world one person at a
