“The purpose of getting power is to be able to give it away.” These are wise words once spoken by the founder of the National Honor Society, Aneurin Bevan, explaining the dynamic of the NHS. Fundamentally, the National Honor Society is an esteemed organization that recognizes the achievements of treasured students and helps them advance their influence on their community, primarily in order to help others. In my past endeavors and years spent attending school, I have surpassed expectations in the fields of academics, character, leadership and service, and intend to use the platform of National Honor Society to further advance my presence in these areas. I am a natural leader, and have gained leadership skills from the multiple extracurricular activities (such as Jazz Band, Gender Equality Club, Gay Straight Alliance, Model United Nations, and Craft Club) and used them to my advantage to help lead in everyday situations as well as being appointed or reconized as a leader officially. Notably, I am the lead alto saxophone in Jazz Band II and a student leader of the Gay Straight Alliance, and I am applying for more leadership positions for my Junior year; these future possible leadership positions include a position in Secretariat in Model United Nations, section leader in marching band and president in the Gay Straight Alliance, and I feel that I have a respectable chance in these imminent leadership positions. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” To me, National Honor Society is not for one’s own benefit; it is a selfless society, one that dedicates itself to service, and to helping others. I feel that I can excel myself and my abilities aforementioned in this essay by being a part of an organization of the NHS’s caliber; to be a part of this society would mean an even greater degree of respect from my peers, helping me in my path as a leader, and intellectually. I feel that the service, and the act of benefitting others simply because those who are fortunate should help others, is more than enough to improve my character upon joining the National Honor Society. Furthermore, assisting my community with easily accessed community service is extremely desirable in my eyes, and is one of the main reasons why I would like to join the NHS.
