“Again artists have used goodness -- goodness in all its aspects of justice, honor, and right -- not for the sake of an ethical sanction but as the one true method of gaining sympathy and human interest.”(W.E.B Du Bois, 103) This is a quote by Du Bois who wrote about art during his lifetime, specifically Negro art. When I think about art I usually visualize painting and drawing, but art can also be music. One of my favorite musicians to listen to is Michael Jackson, specifically the song Leave Me Alone from Bad, 1987. I discovered Michael Jackson when I was about 10 years old in the summer between 3rd and 4th grade. Ever since then I have felt connected to his work and I try to keep his music alive. I think that I clearly depicted my feelings when I drew it even though it took a while. When I first began sketching out my idea, I could not get it to look the way I envisioned it in my head which made me feel exasperated. This is interesting because I was trying to draw the exact emotion that I was feeling at the time. I had to stop drawing and go back to it a few hours later, which allowed me time to refocus and perfect it. Eventually, it turned out how I wanted it to which I am very happy about. I will never forget the first time that I heard Michael Jackson even though I wish that I had been born earlier so that maybe I would have had a chance of seeing him live. However, even though he is not alive anymore his music lives on and we still listen to him today because it is so good and really makes people interested in his life. As W.E.B Du Bois says, “artists have used goodness...as the one true method of gaining sympathy and human interest.” I think that Jackson used his goodness and his talent to draw people in and make them interested and to think about their own lives. When artists use their talent to impact other people, it makes their art timeless and
