Neil Fleming had ample recognition for his research and teaching. He developed a popular and widely used learning style called VARK. It identifies the student s preference for auditory, visual or kinesthetic. This method is also known as VAKT (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Tactile) and is available online to determine a child's learning style. After researching each style, I realized that my two sons needed different learning styles. Learning can be complex. It can, however, be simplified and successful if the parent or the teacher evaluate the child's learning style and apply different techniques to teach the material. Especially in middle school they endure emotional, intellectual, and physical changes. As they grow they become independent, question logic, and demand consistency. Be ready for profound questions and use this opportunity to develop communication skills. If you like to use the same material for all the children, it is easier to have the material appropriate for the older child and remove the inappropriate portion of the content for the younger. It is a privilege to assist my children harness the inherent traits of their age and build knowledge and character which will last a lifetime.
Use technology as an enrichment so that the subject come alive, especially for the visual and reluctant learner. With the proliferation of new educational software which took over the market, there are vast options to choose from. Modern technologies guarantee interesting and fun learning style. They concentrate in structural thinking, which eradicate creativity. Homeschoolers will have time to explore, perform experiments, and learn concepts that they show interest in. It is time consuming to collect all the material together for science experiments, however generate a list of all the material needed for the year together and gather all the material on their days off. Avoid accomplishing this during school hours, it is time consuming and the children will be frustrated since they will skip school work. Ready-made kits can be expensive, however it can save the family time. Many experiments can be performed by using material that can be found at home. To construct an electric motor all it is required is a copper wire, clay, batteries, a piece of wood, a knife, cork, pins, and a knitting needle; luckily these material can be found in numerous households. We keep our material all in one place, so that they can be easily found and reused. Think of each child’s learning style before creating lesson plan. Nobody is more qualified than parents to discern their children’s learning style.
Having the privilege to work with children on a one to one basis, allows the parent to capitalize on their children’s strength and build up their weak areas.
