For my critical book analysis, I chose the book “Never Panic Early” by Fred Haise and Bill Moore. The book was centered around the Apollo 13 launch that took place in the year 1970. The author’s purpose was to retell the story from his perspective as an astronaut, from the actual launch. I chose this book because I love space and wanted to learn more about what really happened to the famous ship. Fred Haise’s “Never panic early” is a survival story meant to inform and entertain the reader. Before becoming an astronaut on the Apollo 13 launch, Fred Haise served roughly 2 years in the Marine Corps training to fly different military airplanes. In 1966, Haise was selected for the Lunar Module pilot position for Apollo 13 and served as a backup pilot for Apollo 8 and 11 missions. …show more content…

When flying, he experienced a failure in the hydraulic system, but Haise was able to calmly land and evacuate before his engine burst into flames. “I had one never panic early experience in the F-86. I experienced a primary hydraulic system failure in flight and the recycling did not restore pressure. After I landed, when the crew chief climbed the ladder up into the cockpit, I told him of the problem. Then I attempted to recycle to demonstrate to him that it didn't work. Shortly thereafter, the fire warning light came on and in my cockpit rear view mirrors, I could see smoke pouring out of the aft end of the plane.” Since the novel I chose is an autobiography written by one of the Apollo 13 astronauts, I don't think there is any bias in the book. Haise wrote the book based on the facts and experience and didn't really include much negative or positive opinion on what happened during Apollo 13. An example of the more factual approach Haise takes is, “First I resigned as a marine and my Officer’s Commission had to be changed to the United States Air Force
