Introduction
New Belgium Brewing practices at great length ethical decision processes, while continuing to help the surrounding communities, its employees, and most importantly the environment. NBB was started after Jeff Lebesch and his wife Kim Jordan made a trip to Belgium, which resulted in Jeff desiring to brew Belgium beer in America. After returning to America, Jeff started a brewery in his basement, which has since exploded into a very profitable organization. The core values and beliefs the company upholds make up a big part in the success of the company. With amazing employee incentives the organization provides, employees are constantly motivated. These values and beliefs are the heart of the company, they form the infrastructure they run from, allowing the microbrewery to excel and make a profit. NBB’s ethical decision making is a result of power the core values and beliefs have over the company. Although power is different in every situation, NBB is a company that strives on reward and legitimate power. Reward power influences the employees with incentives or perks motivating them to be better employees and legitimate power keeps NBB’s core values and beliefs the most important aspect of the company. (Ferrell, O, 2014) NBB is not your average company, with most organizations focusing on profit maximization for their shareholders. They are involved in helping their communities, employees, and the environment. The company was built on the notion of being profitable but responsible, finding the balance between these two is what Jeff Lebesch, founder of the company, built NBB on. Their mission statement states “To manifest our love and talent by crafting our customers' favorite brands and proving business can be a force for good.”(New Belgium Brewing, n.d) This expresses the ethical background the company is based on, along with the ethical decision-making the organization makes. NBB sets goals for themselves in every aspect of the organization. These goals are set in place to keep the company moving forward with innovation and perseverance. “New Belgium Brewing has been selected as one of Outside’s Best Places to Work 2014. The magazine ranked the brewery 7th out of 100 selected companies.”(Brewbound.com, n.d.) This ranking provides evidence of NBB’s ethical culture and decision making by the organizations leaders. The organizational success lies solely on the employees and the leadership behind the name, without the dedication from the employees to uphold NBB’s core values and beliefs; the company would not be where it is today. Reward power, legitimate power, and motivation are factors in the success of the company. These factors remaining constant, never straying from the core values and beliefs, are how NBB’s leadership continues to grow and excel as fast as they have. By setting goals, the company continues to innovate; innovation is key when trying to grow a company. Through different power and motivations, NBB continues to innovate everywhere they can, trying to stay ahead of the market to best tackle it. Holding employees accountable is another key aspect to the success of NBB. With the environment, the company diverts over 94% of its waste away from landfills according to the case. (Ferrell, O, 2014)
