Nikola Tesla Accomplishments

1050 Words5 Pages

Nikola Tesla is one of the greatest inventors of all time. Thought he had his flaws, he continues to be renowned as a genius and even though Tesla is not a household name, we are always using his life's work. His breakthroughs in the world of science and engineering have impacted the world greatly and will continue to for a very long time.
Nikola Tesla was born on July, 10th in 1858. He grew up in the small town of Smiljan, Croatia with his two parents, Djuka Mandic and Milutin Tesla, and his four siblings Dane, Angelina, Milka, and Marcia. His mother, Djuka, inspired his love of technology by inventing little household objects that aided in her homemaking. His father, Milutin, was a Serbian-Orthodox priest and a writer. Milutin wanted his …show more content…

While Edison did think Tesla was a genius, he considered his ideas were impractical. Edison’s method of discovery was more lax due to his lack of education, while Tesla was very meticulous and insisted on working out his theories mathematically before testing is physically. Tesla was a germophobe and Edison was a slob. Both were egocentrics but insisted that they hated people who were. This caused tension. It didn't help when Tesla insisted that his way of transferring electricity, Alternating Current (AC), was better than Edison’s Direct Current (DC). Edison promised Tesla $50,000 (close to $1,000,000 in today's dollars )if he could improve the efficiency of his prototypical dynamos. Tesla took the bet and proceeded to work for months until he finally was happy with the result. He showed his work to Edison and demanded his $50,000 in winnings. Edison proceeded to insist that the bet was a joke saying “When you become a full-fledged American, you will appreciate an American joke.” Tesla, being deeply insulted, quit. He continued to do miscellaneous jobs around the city. Tesla later founded his own company where he patented many inventions. He sold many of them to George Westinghouse who also had a bad history with Edison. This, along with the great success of the Alternating Current rather than his Direct Current caused bitterness on his end and …show more content…

He had over 700 patents, including the Rotating Magnetic Field, Alternating Current, AC Motor, Tesla Coil (Wireless Energy Transmission), Tesla Unit, Radio, Neon Lights, Niagara Falls Power Plant, and use of an Ionosphere. His most well known inventions was the Alternating Current. It was an improvement of Edison's weak and inefficient Direct Current. The Alternating Current changes direction 50-60 times per second, in contrast to the Direct Current, with only went in one direction. This method cut power loss and allowed electricity to be transferred for miles. In 1893 at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Tesla’s Alternating Current powered the entire event. He got the chance to have his invention promoted like this because his business partner, George Westinghouse, outbid Edison for the privilege. Tesla’s Alternating Current is what powers our world today. The Rotating Magnet Field was discovered in 1882 and is a major component in the Alternating Current system. It is a magnetic field with moving polarities in which its opposite poles rotate around a central axis. This breakthrough is often used for electromechanical applications like induction motors and electric generators. The Tesla Coil was invented by Tesla in 1891. It was an electrical resonant transformer circuit. It is used to emit high-voltage, low- current, high-frequency electricity. This invention ushered in the era of
