“Nikola Tesla” by Adam Parker, 2-11-15, 4th Period
Famous engineer Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 in modern-day Croatia. He was the inventor of the ‘Tesla Coil,’ which is still used today. He came to the U.S. in 1884 and worked with Thomas Edison. His mother sparked his interest in engineering, because she made simple household items. His father was a priest, but Nikola didn’t want to become a priest, and instead became an engineer. Nikola Tesla arrived in the United States and began to work beside Thomas Edison.
The two worked together for a few months, before they parted ways. In 1885, Tesla received money to create the ‘Tesla Electric Light Company.’ The people who invested to his company wanted him to find out how to improve arc lighting. He created it, and in 1887, he created the Tesla Electric Company. By the end of 1887, he had invented many things that were based on AC. He patented these ideas, but a businessman named George Westinghouse offered to buy his patents for $60,000. Tesla accepted.

Tesla continued his work and invented many other things, including the Tesla Coil, which is still used in radio technology. At the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, and Tesla showed off his AC inventions. In 1895, Tesla designed AC hydroelectric power plants that were used at Niagara Falls. The next year, more of these power plants were used to power Buffalo, New York, a feat that was noticed around the world.
