Nikola Tesla was a prominent scientist and inventor in history. Although he is best known for his invention of the Tesla coil, he also participated in the fields of providing electricity using an alternating-current (AC) system, radio communication, and technology involving electromagnetic waves.
Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia. His father worked as a priest and wished for Nikola to choose the same line of profession, but his enthusiasm remained with the sciences. This passion for science is believed to have stemmed from his mother, who occasionally invented small devices for household use. After some arguments with his father, Nikola was able to persuade him that being a priest wasn’t what he wanted to do with his life.

This prompted him to emigrate to America in 1884. His description of New York is less than flattering, “What I had left was beautiful, artistic and fascinating in every way; what I saw here was machined, rough and unattractive. It [America] is a century behind Europe in civilization”. Tesla had previously been given a letter of introduction, which he gave to Thomas Edison, who at the time was working on his direct-current (DC) electrical system. Soon after being introduced, Edison hired Tesla, despite the fact that Nikola’s AC electrical current rivaled Thomas’ design. The new employee was offered $50,000 for creating new improvements in Edison’s DC electrical company. Although both persistent inventors initially worked very well alongside one another, their opposite personalities were the downfall of their partnership. Tesla worked long and hard to meet Thomas’ expectations and ultimately acquired the results he was hoping for. Unfortunately, Nikola resigned from Edison’s company due to the fact that he wasn’t given the money he was entitled to. Thomas claimed that his promise of money was merely an “American joke”, which greatly offended Tesla.
