The claim that I have chosen is the effect poverty has on education. The policy that correlates with this claim is the No Child Left Behind Act. This policy is an education-reform bill that was created in 2001 and was signed by President George W. Bush on January 8, 2001. ( The New Rules) This law is an updated policy that was originally created by policymaker President Lyndon B. Johnson, entitled Secondary Education Act. (The Child Left Behind Overview) This bill was created to ensure that the federal government provides all students with quality education.
This policy is really important because the creators of this policy were not only the policymakers, but were also the ones that are able to influence rather or not this policy got passed. Although President Lyndon B. Johnson is the one who is accredited for this policy, congress, business groups, and civil rights activist played a vital part in creating this policy. Human rights are food, fuel, health care, education, shelter. Rather or not children receive these rights is the responsibility of the parents, educators, local, regional, and state. Therefore the policy that the Presidents created and signed is a part of the government’s responsibility.
The No Child Left Behind Act ensures that impoverished school systems are funded with the resources that they need to make sure that impoverished students are given a better chance to succeed. Schools are now being required to test students in grades 3 through 8 every year to measure students’ progress. The test is used to measure students’ progress in math and science. The student’s scores are not only compared district to district but also on a state and international
