Master’s Prepared Nurse Interview Guide
Introduction
“Nurse Educators have a unique opportunity to support bedside staff nurse with knowledge and expertise”. (J. D, personal communication, 2017) The general purpose of this paper is for readers to understand and gain insight into the interaction among education, career path and opportunities. She started at a Level II trauma hospital working on an adult medical unit as a new graduate nurse in a medical center in Reno, NV. After two years of working she transferred to Orthopedics because she wanted an opportunity to specialize and to build my knowledge base to be an operating room nurse. Currently she is one the nursing leaders in a medical/surgical unit and a clinical professor for an affiliated school in her hospital.
Graduate Education
In 2013, she was given the opportunity to be the interim nurse educator for the adult medical unit. One of her professional mentors was the current educator on the unit. The educator wanted to give her the opportunity when she was on a leave of absence. She took the three-month interim position and realized that education was something that she really enjoys. She loved many of the role responsibilities of a clinical nurse educator (i.e. being a resource/expert, teaching new graduate nurses/students, staff development).
Later, she was hired into the nurse educator position on the adult medical unit and part of the job requirement for the nurse educator position was to have a master or to have a plan to get masters in Nursing Education. She then started her Masters in Nursing Education in University of Nevada, Reno. The graduate program was highly competitive. She added, “The one thing I love about my job is that I get to encourage new nurses in their career and see them develop from a new graduate nurse to a professional and similarly with my student nurses. I get to collaborate with other interdisciplinary experts to improve outcomes for patients by educating staff on new evidenced based practices. Change initiatives (i.e. EBP changes) are probably one of the most difficult aspects of my job, especially, when it effects nursing work process.
