An Interview With an Oncology Nurse Leader: The Importance of Ethical Leadership
The assignment for this week is an interview with a leader in her field, in this case oncology nursing. The interview was documented by audio recording, and this is submitted as an adjunct to this paper. The interview addresses why Mrs. Schwartz believes ethics is important in an organization and which fundamental principles are important. We discussed an ethical situation she dealt with in her early career, how she dealt with it, how it was resolved, what resources were available to her, including experts in the field for her to consult with. Finally, I will discuss what I learned about Mrs. Janice Schwartz and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).
Janice Schwartz, MSN, RN, OCN
I have chosen to interview Janice Schwartz, MSN, RN, OCN, (Master of Science in Nursing; Registered Nurse; Oncology Certified Nurse). She has been a nurse since 1996. She is the current President of the New Mexico Oncology Nursing Society (NM-ONS) and has been since 2015. She was also the founder and President of the Kansas ONS from 2006 until 2014. She has worked in Oncology nursing her entire career and has been an advocate for education, credentialing and empowerment of nurses, young and old. She currently works at the Albuquerque Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) as a Cancer Care Coordinator.
