Introduction
A leader is a person that can guide others, provide structure, facilitate change and build relationships that allows organizations to run effectively and promote growth (Cox, 2016). Danielle Harris, RN is that person in my organization. She is currently my Clinical Supervisor. Danielle has been a Certified Nurse Assistant and a Licensed Practical Nurse. After graduating from nursing school with an Associate’s degree about ten years ago, she worked in an ICU. After three years in that field she transferred to a home health agency as a field nurse, then baylor nurse and eventually into the role she holds now as a Clinical Supervisor in which she has been in for the last five years. What are the barriers supporting this fully? How can it be improved? “We care for a multitude of patients with different cultures, races and religious backgrounds” (D. Harris, personal communication, October 27, 2017). “One of biggest barrier that tends to be an issue is of patients with different race than the staff and another is location and safety of living situation” (D. Harris, personal communication, October 27, 2017). “To help overcome this, the wants of the patient attempts to be met first” (D. Harris, personal communication, October 27, 2017). “Having a nurse of a certain race is not always feasible, so then education and support are provided to the nurse and the patient” (D. Harris, personal communication, October 27, 2017). The first competency Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) is to provide patient centered care (Sherwood & Zomorodi, 2014).
