The major issue that the Nurse Manager Mrs. James intended to address was the fact that she believes that the culture of the organization has to change, as presently the character among the staff is that anything goes. Nurse James also has issues with the Nurses poor work attitude and poor performance correlating to the anything goes mentality. According to Corrigan (2012), the need for change from inside an organization is referred to as an internal factor. The Nurses on the Pediatric Unit were resistant to Nurse James’ proposed change for a number of reasons, these include: they may have felt that they have a new leader/manager who has no confidence in them, the staff nurses were also constantly being belittled by their Nurse manager to the doctors, the staff nurses also had a leader who did not want to lead them due to the fact that she openly talks about not liking Pediatrics. The nurses in the department were already demotivated and demoralized and Nurse James simply added to this by making it clear that she would not try to motivate or lead anyone who does not want to change, and also too because she Nurse James felt that as adults they should learn to respect their employment status. The nurse manager also constantly compared her new staff to the ones she worked with prior to being assigned to the Pediatric department and this further added to the issues that the demotivated staff already had. There may be an assumption from the nursing staff that the proposed change is a form of judgement or critique about their way of doing nursing care and of course their competence level. The transactional leadership idea of reward and punishment stands out clearly in her doings as she made it known to her staff that promotion should solely come from their level of competence and not their years of experience. Transactional leaders are used to working with staff who are intrinsically motivated, and this is what Nurse James is used to as she always compares them to her previous staff in the adult unit and based on her opinion the nurses in Pediatric depart lacks this lack of intrinsic motivation and it is making it difficult for Nurse James to work with them. Nurse James’ style of leadership does not involve motivating her staff, another of the transactional leadership founding principles as she believes they are adults and should be able to motivate themselves.
