I am a strong believer in preventative measures when it comes to combating disease and disorders, by encouraging the health and immune systems of individuals to naturally inhibit these afflictions. I will take action in pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in agroecology and plant sciences, which will take me into the career of agricultural consulting from the extent of farms to household gardens. This career path will allow me to promote the most nutrient dense foods and biodiversity; the key constituent to a healthy immune system, to the diets of our local communities. I have confidence in a contemporary approach to health care that emphasizes health and resorts to pharmaceutical medication only when necessary. Furthermore, I will consult with individuals interested in creating home gardens, and in incorporating agroecological concepts to their own land, taking their diets into their own hands. With knowledge in the diversity of edible plants, I will have the ability to guide clients into using plants best suited for their personal preferences and environment; foods that are more palatable for them, more medically inclined to them, and plants best grown in their region. Not only will my occupation stimulate healthier dieting, but gardening can be therapeutic and uplifting. Humans and plants have had an ancient relationship, millennia before the prospect of pharmaceuticals. Plants, especially when grown to their full nutritive potential, have natural medicinal properties. Largely reputed for their medicinal properties in the plant kingdom, are herbs, which are also integrated in agroecological practices. The amount of medicinal properties delivered by plants is amazing, from alterative effects, strengthening immunity over time, to causing instant pain relief as an analgesic. I hope to make the Hawaiian communities become more health conscious and take responsibility for what enters their body; instead of eating simply to satisfy cravings, eating to feed the organisms supporting the bodies
