For me nursing came as a second career on the coattails of a lengthy career in retail management. The question has been presented to me many times Why nursing? Why now? I can’t say that it was a matriarchal family tradition. I can’t even say it was what I have dreamed of since childhood. How I arrived into nursing was simply a journey of life events; losses of many loved ones, amassed careers, having a baby, a desire for transcendence in what I was contributing to society and fears of an unstable economy. Papier-mâché would be a good analogy to use in describing my journey; the numerous layers build upon one another until one day there is a wonderfully reinforced creation. I am the nurse I am today because of the underlying layers from my previous experiences, as the layers continue to build so will my strengths and depths as a nurse. Further education better allows the nurse to gather and synthesize the right data especially in light of the increased complexities of current patient care. Furthermore, technology has an enormous position in the healthcare industry and staying adept continues to be demanding (Saver, 2006). The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree meets many of these demands and continues to focus on evidence based practices. Additionally, the BSN offers components not offered in the Associates degree program such as community health nursing and leadership skills. Moreover, a BSN strengthens the analytical and critical-thinking skills required in safe and competent patient care. As my BSN comes to a close, I have a new appreciation and outlook on the proposed entry level for nursing and concede that a BSN entry level is vital for the advancement of nursing and patient
