The first thing that often pops into people’s minds when they hear Obamacare is President Obama himself. Sure, people have heard of Obamacare and President Obama but what exactly is it? The reason why Obamacare, which is also known as the “Affordable Care Act,” exists is to provide Americans access to affordable Health Insurance. Signed into a law by President Obama in 2010, it reforms both the healthcare and health insurance industries in America. The goal President Obama was trying to achieve when he signed this law was to give more Americans access to quality health insurance and to reduce the growth in health care spending in the United States. Many people can’t afford it due to being poor or other conditions. If a person is sick and can’t afford healthcare because of it, Obamacare can change all that. Because of Obamacare, insurance companies can’t drop you if you make a mistake on your application or when you are sick. Insurance companies can no longer deny you for any reason other than fraud. No more pre-existing conditions means you can’t be denied coverage, charged more, or denied treatment based on health status. For companies, having to follow through with this plan is like selling fire insurance to someone whose house is already on fire. So for someone who is currently sick or has been sick in the past, Obamacare is a pretty big deal. This law is also very beneficial for women. Obamacare gives millions of women access to health services. These services include breastfeeding support, supplies, counseling, mammograms and colonoscopies, and many others. 47 million with private insurance can get mammograms with no co-pay. The purpose to providing women with this type of access is because “providing better preventive care for women will help to bring down the cost of insurance by preventing health issues before they arise.” Under Obamacare, you can’t be charged more due to gender and health status.
