Imagine the life of a loved one being cut short due to obesity and obesity related diseases. America's health has declined a tremendous amount since the 1970’s due to the modernization of lifestyles that people have quickly adapted to. Many factors contributed to the fast paced transition from healthy to unhealthy foods the United States has taken into becoming the countries with the most obese population. People that are thin in size are starting to develop obesity related diseases because the food consumed is not healthy for the body. Many people think that taxing sugar is controversial because Americans can and do have that freedom of choice. That is not entirely true because back in the day Britain would tax America for sugar and tea. The only problem is that American people have become so addicted to sugar and fast food that giving it up is not an option. Sugar has played a major key role in the obesity epidemic America is going through, but a solution can always be found. In Catherine Roberts and Thomas Germain’s consumer report article, The New War on Obesity, Barry Popkin, Ph.D, informs that “ Taxation of sugary beverages and junk food is where we have the most solid evidence of an effect” (4). Taxing sugar will stop the sales of sugar sweetened beverages that causes diabetes in lots of Americans. Diabetes eventually kills a person because it has further effects on the heart causing a heart attack. If the government follows the steps taken towards taxing cigarettes, the 45% of Americans that drink sugary drinks will cut this from their daily diet reducing obesity and obesity related diseases.
